A Wife of Noble Character

A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.
Proverbs 31:10 NIV

We’ve just celebrated Mother’s Day in our country.  A day set aside to let the mother’s in your life know how important they are to you.  A day for those of us whose mother’s are no longer living to reflect on what they meant to us.  There was a moment of sadness on Sunday morning as I can no longer wish my mom a Happy Mother’s day.  I could not greet my mother-in-law as she too is gone.  In the past, my husband and I would order flowers for our mothers. It was a gift they both enjoyed.  For the last few years when I see an ad for Mother’s Day flowers, I realize that we cannot order flowers for them anymore.  Even with these thoughts in the back of my mind, I did enjoy Mother’s day.  I was able to spend time with my son and his growing family.  I was also called by both of my daughter’s.  These family-filled moments are so precious to me. Someday they will be precious memories to my children.

My mother, mother-in-law and my husband’s stepmother are all gone.  These precious women made a huge impact on my life.  I learned to be who I am from these three lovely ladies.  I was privileged to take care of my mom and mother-in-law in our home near the end of their lives.  For my mother-in-law, it was a few precious months.  My mother made sure she raised me knowing and loving God.  My mother-in-law taught me to be gracious with my words.  My husband’s step-mother taught hospitality.  What an example they all were,  their lives brightly reflected the words of Proverbs 31.

When I was young in the middle of raising my own family I was not aware at all of how little time there was to cherish my mom or mother- in -law.  I was so busy with everyday activities- I would forget to call or write. These days, I am so pleased when I receive attention from my grown children and their children.  I regret that I did not call or visit my folks more often.  I look forward so much to my children and grandchildren’s visits.  I am sure my mom, mother-in-law and my husband’s stepmom felt the same way about our visits.  Being able to spend time with the next generation is so wonderful. Looking back I realize that we did not visit or call nearly enough.

A wife of noble character who can find?  She is worth far more than rubies.

I believe that this could also be phrased as a mom of noble character.  Every moment spent with the special women in my life was precious. I would take care of them in my home all over again if it were possible.  I did find in the lives of my mom, my mother-in-law and my husband’s stepmom women of noble character.  They indeed were worth far more than rubies.

I hope that your Mother’s Day was full of God’s blessings
